About The Project: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Times: Those who have lived through much of the twentieth century in the United States have witnessed some of the most amazing and horrific events of our collective history as a nation. Over the past several years I have developed an interest in this time period because there is just so much that has happened. Specifically, the time of the Great Depression and the events leading up to World War II is of real interest to me. Trying to understand past events from reading textbooks is difficult though. It's hard to get a sense of things. It wasn't until I found the Library of Congress's database with their collection of images from the 1930's and 1940's that I began to see how I could delve into this history on a more personal level. This collection of images taken by the Farm Security Administration is particularly compelling. The collection is a photo documentary project, meant to highlight the government's efforts to remedy social problems such as poverty and unemployment. It's also an enduring record of the realities of the Great Depression and the time leading up to the second World War. It's my belief that these photos transcend their original purpose and speak to us today of the ever present human condition: people enduring and surviving with dignity and grace even under the most trying of circumstances. Through my own project, I hope to gain a greater understanding of this time period and the people who lived through it and to pass that information along to the viewer through my own images and text.
