Collages-Use, Reuse, and Reinvention
One man's trash is another man's treasure. People decide every day to throw something away or to keep it. Material objects outlive their usefulness and are discarded by their owners. The world is full of stuff! My current collage work explores this very question: what can be done with something once it is no longer needed or wanted? Transformation and reuse are the key concepts here. The collages presented below are made with old record album jackets, book covers, and other papers. Advances in technology and changes in personal preferences have made these items less desirable to many people. From an artist's perspective, however, the materials are a gold mine waiting to be discovered and made into something else entirely. The opportunity to explore pattern and design while re purposing material is a real challenge. Each outcome is a little different based on the materials at hand. It's this re-use and reinvention that interests me most. Discarded items take on a new life and different purpose in these collages and are given a second chance to be useful and enjoyed.
